ASME publishes more than 600 codes and standards for the engineering profession, the public, industry, and government. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code establishes rules of safety governing the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers, pressure vessels, and nuclear power plant construction components.
Revised ASME Y14.5 - 2009 Standard on GD & T
The Y14.5 standard is considered the authoritative guideline for the design language of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD & T.) It establishes uniform practices for stating and interpreting GD & T and related requirements for use on engineering drawings and in related documents.
GD & T is an essential tool for communicating design intent - that parts from technical drawings have the desired form, fit, function and interchangeability. By providing uniformity in drawing specifications and interpretation, GD & T reduces guesswork throughout the manufacturing process improving quality, lowering costs, and shortening deliveries.
Now, a consensus committee of experts has revised Y14.5 for 21st-century applications. Important changes address: concept of feature of size; datum references and degrees of freedom; composite position tolerances; surface boundaries and axis methods of interpretation; profile tolerances; and symbology and modifiers tools. Additionally, the subject matter has been restructured for better readability, with profile, orientation, and form now in separate sections, and material within sections reorganized.
B30.3 - 2004 Construction Tower Cranes
Applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance
of construction tower cranes, powered by electric motors or internal combustion
engines, and any variations thereof which retain the same fundamental
characteristics. The scope includes cranes of the above type that that adjust
operating radius by means of a boom luffing mechanism, or by means of a
combination of the two. Construction tower cranes may be mounted on fixed or
traveling bases. Additional mounting means may include arrangements that
permit the crane to climb in the structure being built, or that permit increasing
the tower height as the structure rises and utilizing braces attached to the host
structure as needed. The requirements of this volume are applicable only to
cranes when used in lifting work. Permanently mounted tower cranes (refer to
ASME B30.4) and mobile crane tower attachments (refer to ASME B30.5) are
not within the scope of this volume.
B30.4 - 2003 Portal, Tower, and Pedestal Cranes
B30.4 applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance of electric motor or internal-combustion engine powred portal tower, and pedestal cranes, that adjust operating radius by means of a boom luffing mechanism or by means of a trolley traversing a horizontal boom, that may be mounted on a fixed or traveling base, and to any variation thereof that retain the same fundamental characteristics. This standard applies only to portal tower, and pedestal cranes utilizing a drum and wire rope for hoisting and which are used for hoisting work. The requirements for construction tower cranes (refer to ASME B30.3), telescopic boom cranes (refer to ASME B30.5), and knuckleboom cranes (refer to ASME B30.22) are not included in this standard.
B30.5 - 2007 Mobile and Locomotive Cranes
Within the general scope defined in Section 1, American National Standard
B30.5 applies to crawler cranes, locomotive cranes, wheel-mounted cranes, and
any variations thereof that retain the same fundamental characteristics. The
scope includes only cranes of the above types that are basically powered by
internal combustion engines or electric motors. Side boom tractors and cranes
designed for railway and automobile wreck clearance, digger derricks, cranes
manufactured specifically for, or when used for, energized electrical line service,
knuckle boom, trolley boom cranes, and cranes having a maximum rated
capacity of one ton or less are excluded.
B30.9 - 2006 Slings
Applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance
of slings for lifting purposes, made from alloy steel chain, sewn synthetic
webbing, wire rope, metal mesh, and synthetic fiber rope used in conjunction
with equipment described in other volumes of the B30 Standard, except as
specified in ANSI/ASME B30.12. Slings made from materials or constructions
other than those detailed in this volume shall be used only in accordance with
recommendations of the sling manufacturer.
B30.10 - 2009 Hooks
B30.10 applies to the construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of
hooks used in conjunction with equipment addressed in other volumes of the
B30 Standard.
B30.11 - 2004 Monorails and Underhung Cranes
B30.11 applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and maintenance of underhung cranes and monorail systems where load-carrying members, such as end trucks or carriers (trolleys), travel either on the external or internal lower flange of a runaway track section, single monorail track, crane bridge girder, or jib boom including all curves, switches, transfer devices, lift and drop sections, and associated equipment. This volume includes provisions of both power-driven and hand-operated equipment on which the carriers are independently controlled. This equipment is grouped together because of the similarity of construction and because of common considerations which are peculiar to this type of equipment. Systems used for transporting personnel require special considerations and are not included in this Volume. Also excluded from this Volume are conveyor systems, including power and free conveyors.
B30.16 - 2007 Overhead Hoists (Underhung)
B30.16 - 2007 Overhead Hoists (underhung ) applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of hand chain-operated chain hoists and electric and air-powered chain and wire ropes hoists used for, but not limited to, vertical lifting and lowering of freely suspended, unguided, loads which consist of equipment and materials. Requirements for a hoist that is used for a special purpose, such as, but not limited to, tensioning a load, nonvertical lifting service, lifting a guided load, lifting personnel, or drawing both the load and the hoist up or down the load chain or rope when the hoist is attached to the load, are not included in this volume.
B30.20 - 2006 Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices
Volume B30.20 includes provisions that apply to the marking, construction,
installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation of below-the-hook
lifting devices, other than slings, used for attaching loads to hoist. The devices
are arranged in four chapters as follows: Chapter 20-1: Structural and
Mechanical Lifting Devices. Chapter 20-2: Vacuum Lifting Devices. Chapter
20-3: Operated Close Proximity Lifting Magnets. Chapter 20-4: Remotely
Operated Lifting Magnets.
B30.22 - 2005 Articulating Boom Cranes
B30.22 applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and
maintenance of cranes with knuckle booms articulated by hydraulic cylinders,
which are powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors and are
mounted on a mobile chassis or stationary installation. Frequently, hoist
mechanism to broaden their versatility. Load hoist mechanism equipped
machines are covered by this volume. Some basic machine types within this
scope are convertible for excavating work and other uses not considered to be
lifting service. The Requirements of this volume are applicable only to such
machines when used as lifting cranes. The following units are exempt from this
volume: - Maximum related capacity of 1 ton or less; - Booms constructed of
nonconductive type materials; - Equipped with or designed primarily for
personnel baskets, platforms, ladders, etc.; - When equipped with non lifting
attachments; - Forestry and logging applications; and - Telescoping boom cranes
that do not articulate (covered under B30.5).
B30.23 - 2005 Personnel Lifting Systems
Within the general scope defined in Section I, ASME B30.23 may apply to
hoisting equipment and accessory equipment covered within certain volumes of
the ASME B30 Standard, that is used to lift, lower, or transport personnel in a
platform, by wire rope or chain, from hoist equipment, or by a platform that is
mounted on a boom of the hoist equipment. The lifting of personnel is not
allowed using some ASME 30 Standard equipment. The ASME B30 volume
addressing the hoisting equipment to be used shall be consulted for the
applicability of the ASME B30.23 volume.
B30.26 - 2004 Rigging Hardware
B30.26 Applies to the construction, installation, operation, inspection, and
maintenance of detachable rigging hardware used for lifting purposes in
conjunction with equipment described in other volumes of the B30 Standard.
This hardware includes shackles, links, rings, swivels, turnbuckles, eyebolts,
hoist rings, wire rope clips, wedge sockets, and rigging blocks. Use of the same
hardware for purposes other than lifting is excluded from the provisions of this
Volume.
